Palo Verde

Growing up in Phoenix, I'd always wondered why they named palo verdes as such. OK, they have smooth green bark, but they don't much look like poles...until you see them in Baja. No leaves, not overly twiggy - very different looking from the other trees there. And lo and behold, there such a thing as a palo blanco too...different species, and definitely white :)
