Volunteering for the Marine Mammal Physiology Project is a great way to develop skills for a future job in animal training, and to gain hands-on experience with scientific research involving animals in captivity. Our volunteers often move on to training jobs at zoological parks or to graduate school.

Physiology Project

Marine mammal training
for scientific research

Needed: Volunteers to participate in animal husbandry with marine mammals at Long Marine Laboratory.

Skills: Volunteers will develop skills in animal care, husbandry, and eventually animal training. Participants will also attend a lecture series on training techniques. No prior experience is required to join the program. Volunteers beginning in the program learn basic animal husbandry, and eventually learn hands-on training techniques through time.

Requirements: It is important to provide both consistency and dedication, for the animals and the staff. Volunteers must commit to 15 hours per week for a minimum of one year. The commitment extends through summer and may include some holiday times.
