Supplement 1: Species Identification
Coast Redwood and Douglas Fir individuals were easily identified in most of our helicopter images. Tall, conical dark green shapes stand out in stark contrast to the more rounded, light green tops of Tanoak, California Bay, Madrone, or chaparral species such as Manzanita. In comparison to each other, Douglas-fir is often a dark green to blue-green, and Coast Redwood is a lighter, yellow-green with often more obvious texture to their branches while Douglas-fir trees might appear "fuzzy".

We were very careful not to confuse individuals of Coast Redwood or Douglas-fir with Knobcone Pine or Eucalyptus stands. Knobcones are often smaller, with a whispy light-grey foliage and Eucalyptus stands are lighter green with sparse foliage and dome shaped tops.
