Activities in Patagonia

[Field research and living in Argentina] [M.I.R.T. team projects][Mexico][M.I.R.T. home]

UCSC-MIRT students coming to Patagonia will benefit from their interactions with people of a different culture, language, habits and life values. Native Patagonians are very rare today. The sparsely populated area that makes about 25 % of Argentina is the homeland of people coming from every corner of the country.

From an academic standpoint, UCSC-MIRT students will be integrated in an on-going, long term, in depth investigation of the biology of the southern elephant seal with emphasis on biomedically relevant projects focused on the animals' unique physiological and biochemical adaptations to their environment. Students will spend approximately 60% of their time in the field monitoring the dynamics of the population, conducting experiments and collecting samples for analysis. The remaining 40% will be dedicated to laboratory and numerical analysis in the laboratories of Centro Patagonico, Puerto Madryn interacting with Argentine students and scientists as well as MIRT faculty from UCSC as well as Dr. Campagna.
