Lori Crumbliss and James Richardson prepare to load samples on the ABi 3100 Prism instruments.

The MEEG Core Facility contains two ABI 3100 prism DNA Analyzers. Researchers prepare reactions in their own laboratories utilizing one of the dye sets specified for these instruments then the MEEG manager (on a rotating basis among EEB graduate students ) loads the samples on either 3100. The 50cm array (sequencing) reads in the neighborhood of 800 base pairs simultaneously in each of the 16 capillaries in just under 2.5 hours. Fragment analysis is also done using the 50cm array. Both machines use POP-6 polymer.

Typical readout from a 3100 sequencing run. Unreadable bases are noted in black.

Typical readout of AFLP analysis from a population of related individuals.
